Ipswich Star

The Ipswich Star – formerly the Evening Star – is an evening tabloid newspaper published from Monday to Friday and sold widely throughout eastern and central Suffolk, particularly in the south-east of the county around its home town of Ipswich and in nearby Felixstowe, but also in the towns of Woodbridge, Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds.

It was founded in 1885 as the poetically-named The Star of the East. It was renamed the Evening Star in 1893 and kept that name until it was relaunched as the Ipswich Star in January 2012, dropping Saturday publication at the same time. Its Felixstowe edition was also given a distinctive masthead as the Felixstowe Star.

It’s published by Archant Suffolk (a branch of the Archant media group’s Archant Anglia division) as the evening counterpart to the East Anglian Daily Times, with which it shares editorial offices (and, since 2010, its news-gathering operation).

For many years there was an associated Saturday sports special, the Green ‘Un, which now appears as a supplement to the Evening Star on Monday and Thursday (and to the EADT on Saturday and Monday).

An e-edition’s available by paid subscription. The Star Advertiser companion weekly freesheets for Ipswich and Felixstowe ceased publication in early 2012 and were replaced by weekly free “Advertiser” editions of the Star. The Coastal Scene freesheet for the Framlingham area remains in print.

A very small number of copies (500) are handed free to commuters at Ipswich railway station every evening.

A mobile site was launched in July 2011. An iPhone/iPad app is also available.
