Craven Herald & Pioneer

The Craven Herald & Pioneer (or Craven Herald, as it’s known colloquially) is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, including the market town of Skipton, Settle in Ribblesdale, and Barnoldswick. (All three were part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974; Barnoldswick’s now in Lancashire, the other two became part of North Yorkshire.)

It was founded in 1875 as the Craven Herald, but added and Wensleydale Standard to the title three years later, and kept it there until 1922. In 1937 it absorbed the West Yorkshire Pioneer, whose history went back to 1865.

It’s published by Newsquest (Bradford). The editorial offices are in Skipton.

Until very recently it was a broadsheet with its front page given over entirely to small ads, a practice that was common with newspapers up to Victorian times but has now virtually died out. It switched to tabloid format and put a more conventional balance of news coverage and advertising on its front page in November 2009.

It comes out on Thursdays.
