The Scarborough News

The Scarborough News – formerly the Scarborough Evening News – is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the North Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough and the surrounding area for 40 or so miles, above all the 12-mile radius around Scarborough including the towns of Filey and Hunmanby.

It’s published by Yorkshire Regional Newspapers (part of the nationwide Johnston Press group) and is their flagship newspaper. As a daily publication it was also the largest selling daily title on the Yorkshire coast.

It was first published in 1882. It bought out its rival, the six years older Scarborough Daily Post, in 1921. Up until 2006 the Evening News was still printed in the town.

A companion freesheet, the Trader, ceased publication in September 2011.

In April 2012 Johnston Press announced that five of their evening titles including the Scarborough Evening News would switch to weekly publication at the end of May, as part of a shift towards “platform-neutral” publishing. The new weeklies would be “bumper” issues, containing more features; at the same time, the newspapers’ companion websites would intensify their news publishing efforts and would be accompanied by iPad apps.

The Scarborough News now comes out on Thursdays. The first weekly issue was on 31 May 2012.
