All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

Scottish Provincial Press

Scottish Provincial Press Ltd, based in Inverness, is the dominant newspaper publishing company in the North of Scotland and has a significant presence in the North East, with fifteen weekly titles reaching from Caithness and Sutherland in the north to Lochaber in the south-west and Banffshire in the south-east.

History

The majority of SPP’s newspapers date back to the nineteenth century – The Inverness Courier as far back as 1817. But the company itself has gone under the name of Scottish Provincial Press only since 1993, before which it was known as Highland & Grampian Publishing Ltd – and even that name was registered only in 1990. On the other hand one of the subsidiary companies, Northern Times Ltd, goes back to 1942; another, the Moray & Nairn Newspaper Co Ltd, dates from 1885.

In August 2001 SPP moved a short distance across northern Inverness from its previous headquarters in Henderson Road to a new facility in Stadium Road, the appropriately named New Century House.

Recent developments

SPP moved all its newspapers’ websites onto a content management system owned by Iliffe News & Media in January 2012.
