Burnley Express
It was founded in 1877 as the Burnley Express and East Lancashire Observer. Three years later it absorbed the 1855-founded The Burnley News and became the Burnley Express and Advertiser; it added greater geographical specificity to its title in 1886 by becoming the Burnley Express and Clitheroe Division Advertiser. In 1933 it absorbed The Burnley News, which had been founded in 1912, and was renamed the Burnley Express and Burnley News accordingly. It continued under that title until at least the early 1970s, but has since become simply the Burnley Express.
It’s published by East Lancashire Newspapers, which is a subsidiary of nationwide local paper publishers Johnston Press‘s North West division. The editorial offices are in Burnley.
Of the two editions by day (Tuesday and Friday), the Friday edition is the larger, in terms of both page count and circulation.
There used to be three local editions. The Pendle Express had more distinctive content but came out on Tuesdays only. It ceased publication in June 2011. The Padiham Express, a slip edition with its own editorial content for the first few pages of each issue, ceased Tuesday publication at the same time, although it continues to appear on Fridays.
