Shrewsbury Chronicle

The Shrewsbury Chronicle is a weekly tabloid newspaper distributed free in the town of Shrewsbury and sold in surrounding parts of Shropshire within a radius of about 10 miles, including the towns of Church Stretton, Minsterley and Much Wenlock.

It was founded in 1772 by Thomas Wood and, astonishingly, has kept its original title throughout its existence. It’s now published by Telford-based Shropshire Newspapers, the local division of the Midland News Association that also publishes the evening county-wide newspaper the Shropshire Star.

The editorial offices are in Shrewsbury, but have moved twice in recent years; first from Castle Foregate to Abbey Foregate in 2009, then to the Bellstone at the end of 2011.

There are separate editions for North Shropshire, the North Shropshire Chronicle; and, since March 2011, the Oswestry Chronicle for the North West of the county.

Shropshire Newspapers announced at the end of April 2009 that the paper would become a freesheet within Shrewsbury town and that the price elsewhere (and for the North Shropshire Chronicle) would be reduced to 40p. The papers were redesigned at the same time.

It comes out on Thursday mornings.
