Selby Times (defunct)

The Selby Times was a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the North Yorkshire town of Selby and the surrounding villages.

It was founded in 1862 as The Selby Times and Howdenshire and Goole Advertiser and thus celebrated its 150th anniversary in January 2012. It adopted its shortened title in 1958.

It was published by the Doncaster-based South Yorkshire Newspapers, part of the Johnston Press regional newspaper giants. The editorial offices were in Selby.

An associated freesheet newspaper, the Selby Times Extra, closed in 2008.

It was at the centre of an industrial dispute in the summer of 2011, as Johnston Press announced plans to cut 18 jobs at SYN, with the editorial posts at the South Yorkshire Times and the Goole Courier being merged with that of the Selby Times. The ensuing strike lasted for eight weeks from mid-July until early September.

It was published on Thursdays.

In August 2013 Johnston sold the Times to Chronicle Publications Ltd, who announced their plans to merge it with their existing title the Selby Post as the Selby Times & Post. The last issue of the Times was published on 15 August.
