Wear Valley Mercury (defunct)

The Wear Valley Mercury was a weekly newspaper sold in the Wear Valley district of County Durham.

It was founded in September 2006, the first new newspaper for the area in 50 years. It was an independent title, and was a sister newspaper of the Teesdale Mercury. It was based in Crook, and was also distributed to the towns of Willington, Tow Law, West Auckland, Weardale and surrounding areas.

Like the Teesdale Mercury, it had a distinctive format somewhere between a broadsheet and a Berliner.

It came out on Fridays.

It closed on 23 December 2011 as a result of the adverse economic climate. Although the URL below is still valid, there’s no longer a website at that address.
