Swindon Advertiser
It’s published by Newsquest (Wiltshire) from editorial offices in the town.
The Advertiser was first published in broadsheet format in 1854 as the Swindon Advertiser and Monthly Record. It was issued on a monthly basis to avoid attracting the stamp duty then payable on newspapers published every 28 days or more frequently (it claims to have been the first “penny paper” in the United Kingdom).
It was renamed the Swindon Advertiser and Wiltshire, Berkshire and Gloucestershire Chronicle in 1870, then became the Evening Advertiser in 1926 (although it had started daily publication almost thirty years earlier, in 1898).
It switched to tabloid format in 1995 (having appeared as a tabloid briefly during the Second World War to save paper). It reverted to the name Swindon Advertiser in 2005, at which time it flirted briefly with two-edition publication; the second edition was dropped in 2006.
There’s an associated weekly freesheet tabloid, the Swindon Star.
