It was founded in 1874. Effectively it was a relaunch of the earlier Ipswich Express, and Essex & Suffolk Mercury, which started publication in 1839.

It’s based in Ipswich (which is also the centre for its Eastern edition and its new Ipswich edition launched in 2013), but also has editions for the areas around Bury St Edmunds (Western edition) and Colchester (Essex edition). Until a couple of years back it also had a northern edition for the area around Lowestoft, but that’s been absorbed into the Eastern edition.

It’s published by Archant Suffolk, part of the Archant Anglia division of the Archant media group (formerly Eastern Counties Newspapers). The editorial offices – and, since 2010, its news-gathering operations – are shared with the Ipswich Star, its evening counterpart. There are also offices in Framlingham, Bury St Edmunds, Sudbury and Stowmarket.

A small number of issues are distributed free brand-to-hand at Colchester railway station, with a further few hundred free copies being left at pickup points.
