All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

Ripon Gazette

The Ripon Gazette (to give it its full title, the Ripon Gazette & Boroughbridge Herald) is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in the cathedral city of Ripon in western North Yorkshire, as well as the nearby towns of Boroughbridge, Harrogate and Knaresborough.

It was founded in 1866 as The Ripon Gazette. In 1931 it absorbed the Ripon Observer and expanded its title accordingly to the The Ripon Gazette & Observer. It absorbed the Boroughbridge Herald in 1978.

It’s published by the Harrogate-based Ackrill Media Group, part of the nationwide Johnston Press group of regional newspaper publishers across the UK. It’s part of a group of newspapers headed by the Harrogate Advertiser, and shares offices in Harrogate with them, its own offices in Ripon having closed.

It used to come out on Fridays, but moved to Thursday publication as of 31 May 2012, the same day it dropped its former broadsheet format.
