Wakefield Extra (defunct)
The Wakefield Extra – which also incorporated the Rothwell Extra – was a weekly freesheet tabloid for the City of Wakefield in the Metropolitan County of West Yorkshire, including the smaller towns of Rothwell and Normanton within the City boundaries.
It was founded in 1980 as one of a series of Extra freesheets published for the area by the Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group, part of nationwide publishers of regional and local newspapers Johnston Press. It shared editorial offices with the paid-for weekly title for the city, the Wakefield Express, in a building in the centre of the city that had housed the Express since it was founded in 1852.
It had no website of its own; its online presence was through the Express‘s website.
It came out on Thursdays.
In 2009 it merged with the Pontefract & Castleford Extra and the Ossett & Horbury Observer to form a new title, the Midweek Extra.
