Maghull & Aintree Star

It’s published by Trinity Mirror Merseyside and is one of several Star titles for northern and eastern suburban Liverpool, along with the Anfield & Walton Star, the Kirkby Star and the Crosby & Bootle Star. (An earlier title, the Huyton & Roby Star, ceased publication in October 2008.)

It was launched in 1984 as the Maghull & District Weekly Star. From 1991 to 1994 it was simply the Maghull Star. It was then renamed the Maghull & Aintree Star for the first time before becoming the Maghull & Aintree edition of the Star & Merseymart. It reverted to the Maghull & Aintree Star name once more in 2001.

For a time from December 2008 it was distributed via pickup points, but subsequently reverted to direct delivery to homes.

In January 2012 Trinity Mirror North West & North Wales merged the Star and two other Merseyside freesheets, the Bootle Times and the Anfield & Walton Star into a single newspaper, The Star, which was distributed as a free supplement to the Tuesday edition of the Liverpool Echo as well as being sold as a stand-alone title. That decision was reversed in June 2013, with the newspaper getting a magazine-style facelift and the publication day switched to Wednesday. (Prior to the merger the Maghull & Aintree Star had appeared on Thursdays.)

The old URL at maghullstar.co.uk now redirects to the Maghull section of the Echo‘s website. A new website was to have been launched for the revived Star series at liverpoolcommunities.co.uk, but nearly one year on (April 2014) that URL continues to redirect to the Echo‘s website.
