Liverpool Echo

The Liverpool Echo is Merseyside’s biggest-selling newspaper and as of December 2011 was the United Kingdom’s second-biggest selling regional evening newspaper, after the Wolverhampton-based Express & Star. It’s a tabloid and, until January 2014, was published every day of the week except Sunday.

It was founded in 1879 as a cheaper evening sister paper to what was then the Liverpool Daily Post. Both were Liberal newspapers, at a time when Liverpool was a strongly Conservative city.

The original publishing company, Liverpool Daily Post & Echo Ltd, was relaunched as Trinity Holdings plc in 1985 (at roughly the same time, both papers switched from broadsheet to tabloid format) and merged with Mirror Group Newspapers in 1999 to form Trinity Mirror, which immediately became the UK’s largest newspaper publisher.

The Echo‘s sold throughout the City of Liverpool and the Metropolitan Boroughs of Sefton and Wirral, as well as parts of the neighbouring District of West Lancashire and the area around Runcorn in Cheshire.

On 19 January 2014 the first edition of the Sunday Echo hit the news stands, marking the transition of the Echo to seven-day operation.
