All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

The Echo

The Echo is a daily tabloid newspaper sold throughout South Essex from Monday to Friday, covering the towns of Basildon, Southend, Rayleigh, Rochford, Wickford and Billericay, and the Thurrock and Castle Point districts.

It was founded in 1969. It’s published by Newsquest (Essex) from editorial offices in Basildon.

There are three editions:

  • Basildon
  • Southend
  • Castle Point

They form part of a group of newspapers for South Essex together with a weekly freesheet, the Thurrock Gazette.

Andy Coulson, Director of Communications of the Conservative Party from 2007 and then for Prime Minister David Cameron from May 2010 to January 2011 (at which point he resigned over continuing media focus on the phone hacking scandal that blew up during his stint as editor of the News of the World), started his career in journalism on The Echo in 1986.

An app’s available by paid subscription for iOS, Android and Kindle Fire devices.
