All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

Messenger Extra

The Messenger Extra is a weekly freesheet tabloid newspaper for the towns of Gravesend and Dartford in north-western Kent, delivered mostly direct to homes but also through unstaffed dispensers in supermarkets.

It’s published by the KM Group (formerly the Kent Messenger Group) and is a companion to their paid titles for the area, the Gravesend Messenger and the Dartford Messenger (which are local editions of the Kent Messenger). The editorial offices are collocated with those two newspapers’ offices in Gravesend, and the Messenger Extra shares their websites.

It was founded in 1983 as the Gravesend & Dartford Extra. In 1988 it split into two editions named, predictably, the Gravesend Extra and the Dartford Extra. The two were reunited in 2009 under the present title, by which time the Dartford edition had expanded to cover Swanley as the Dartford & Swanley Extra; Swanley was dropped from the circulation area once more in 2011.

It comes out on Fridays. It’s also available online as an e-edition, although the dedicated website at gravesendepaper.co.uk now redirects to the Messenger‘s site.
