All about the United Kingdom’s national, regional and local press

Bexhill Observer

The Bexhill Observer – more formally, the Bexhill-on-Sea Observer – is a weekly tabloid newspaper sold in and around the East Sussex coastal town of Bexhill-on-Sea.

It was formerly published by T R Beckett Ltd, a branch of nationwide publishers of regional newspapers Johnston Press‘s South division, but Beckett was absorbed into its neighbouring larger Johnston subsidiary, Sussex Newspapers, in 2009. The editorial offices are in St Leonards; the front office in Bexhill closed in July 2012.

It was founded in 1896, although the relevant page in Sussex Newspapers’ online media pack erroneously claims that it’s been the newspaper of record for the town for over 200 years. In 1930 it absorbed a slightly older newspaper, the Bexhill-on-Sea Chronicle (established in 1887).

There’s a freesheet companion, the Bexhill Adnews.

It comes out on Fridays.
