Kent & Sussex Courier

It was founded in 1872 under the title The Kent & Sussex Courier, and Southern Counties Herald. For just over a year from November 1893 it was The Kent & Sussex Courier and the Tunbridge Wells Gazette, before becoming The Kent & Sussex Courier at the beginning of 1895. It dropped the The in 1978 and split into several editions:

• Crowborough
• East Sussex
• Edenbridge
• Tonbridge
• Tunbridge Wells
• Weald

An edition for Uckfield was added in 1988. From 1993 to 2000 all became separate Courier titles before re-merging under the Kent & Sussex Courier title once more. As of 2012 the number of editions had fallen to five:

• Edenbridge
• Paddock Wood
• Sussex
• Tonbridge
• Tunbridge Wells

but the Weald edition was revived during the course of the year.

It’s published by the Courier Media Group, a branch of Northcliffe Media, which used to be the Daily Mail & General Trust‘s regional newspaper publishing wing but was spun off to form part of the new Local World group at the end of 2012. The central editorial offices are in Tunbridge Wells and moved from the North Farm Retail Park to Calverley Road in August 2011, thus returning to the town centre after 37 years. There are additional local contact points throughout the circulation area.

It used to have no website of its own, with a thisiscourier.co.uk URL that redirected to Northcliffe Media’s thisiskent.co.uk website (shared between Courier Media Group and Kent Regional Newspapers). However, Local World decided early in 2013 that all its newspapers should have their own “publisher-branded” websites by the summer.
