It was founded in 1985 as The Deeside Piper but changed name in February 1989 to simply The Piper with the launch of a second edition for Donside (Huntly and Alford). It changed to its present title just five issues later.

It remains the lead title of the series (which also included the Inverurie Herald until a recent reorganisation). It’s published by by Angus County Press, part of the Johnston Press UK-wide group of regional newspapers, and produced from editorial offices in Banchory.
